Good Friday

Arise, oh Lord, in Your anger
Arise against the wrath of my enemies
Awake, awake, oh arm of the Lord.
Was it not you who cut Rahab into pieces?
You who pierced the dragon?

Arise, as in the days of the Exodus,
When You delivered, with a strong arm, your people.
Come again in flame and sword,
You Who shattered Pharaoh’s army.
The horse and its rider you cast into the sea.

But this is the hour when darkness reigns.
The light shone in the darkness, but men loved the darkness, because their deeds were evil.

Behold, he calls for Elijah.
Elijah, who defeated the prophets of Ba’al.
Elijah, who called fire from heaven.
But there is no answer.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from rescuing me?

Do you work wonders for the dead?
Do the departed rise up to praise you?
Oh Lord, is your steadfast love declared in the grave?
